Metropolitan Arseny Rostovskiy, an enlightener of Moscow, a preacher and theologian of Ukrainian origin, whose memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on March 13 (February 28 in the old style), lived a difficult life in faithful service to his God. He was born in 1697 in the city of Volodymyr in the family of an Orthodox priest of noble origin from Volyn. The future metropolitan's secular name was Alexander Ivanovich Matsievich. He received a quality primary education in a local spiritual school and continued his studies at the Lviv Catholic Academy. In the spring of 1741, Arseny was ordained as the Metropolitan of Tobolsk and All Siberia. A theologian and excellent preacher who consistently defended the Church's right to independence from secular authorities, this metropolitan was transferred to the Rostov diocese in May 1742 and appointed a member of the Holy Synod.
